What is Peripheral Neuropathy?

  • Weakness, numbness, and pain from nerve damage, usually in the hands and feet

  • Over 3 million US cases annually

  • The pain is chronic, has no cure but can be improved with treatment

  • What is the inevitable outcome of diabetic neuropathy if left untreated?

  • Over half of all amputations(the majority are foot amputations) per year are due to diabetic complications, e.g. neuropathy

  • Out of those 86,000 amputations yearly, half were preventative cases where proper foot care was the sole remedy

How Do I Know If I’m at Risk?

Experiencing :

  • Pins-and-needles sensation, numbness, and weakness

  • Difficulty walking, muscle weakness, problems with coordination, or loss of muscle apprehension, blister, burning sensation, callus, cramping, slow reflexes, tingling feet, or tingling fingers

The best way to be sure if you have or are at risk of having neuropathy is to go to a doctor to get a medical diagnosis. If you have diabetes you are at high risk for developing neuropathy the longer you have it,  in addition to if you have poor blood sugar control, are overweight, have kidney disease, or smoke.

What Are My Treatment Options?

Prescription drugs only treat pain in neuropathy patients and do not have any role in repairing damaged nerves that are the root cause of chronic pain. They are only moderately effective in treating the pain caused by nerve damage but as a result, the side effects can give patients a whole new array of medical issues.

Why this isn't the solution?

Specialists dealing with the treatment of neuropathy will likely tell you that there is no cure. If you are an uninsured patient the costs will be upwards of $500. The treatment plan will consist of dietary changes, exercises, and conventional prescription drugs. The end result will help the diabetes to subside, but unfortunately your nerves are still damaged and will not have been repaired in the process.
